At 9-7, the Bemidji State softball team is only two wins shy of last year’s total, and they are only about one third of the way through the season. BSU takes seven wins and five losses away from last week’s Tucson Invitational. The Beavers come home happy. Two Bemidji natives, Jessica Yost and Monica Wittner, really return home.
Yost leads the Beavers’ pitching rotation, showing great improvement over last season. She has already doubled last season’s win total with 6 victories. Yost also punched out 65 batters in only 42.1 innings of work, compared to 60 stirkeouts in all of 2014.
The freshman, Wittner makes her presence felt in clutch situations. She has appeared in half the team’s games, usually as a pinch hitter, pinch runner, or defensive substitution.
The Tucson Invitational showed Bemidji State’s strong pitching and defense. To keep winning games with regularity, the Beavers will need to speed up the bats. Wittner and Yost will have the benefit of home cooking to fuel their hard work.
