Northwoods Adventure-Mushroom Workshop
The Northland Arboretum in Brainerd is a great place to walk through the woods and possibly grab a snack.
Nick and Sarah Jordan lead a workshop to help people identify wild mushrooms with the hopes of finding an edible treat.
Two pieces of advice for mushroom hunter: find a good field guide and start slowly.
Pored mushrooms are much safer than gilled mushrooms.
The workshop begins with a lecture and slideshow about various kinds of mushrooms.
After covering the basics, the group journeys through the Northland Arboretum on a mushroom foray.
The group finds plenty of puff balls, which are generally edible if the inside color is white and consistent.
The foray proves a major success.
The group brings their mushrooms to Boomer’s Pizza to transform their hard work into a tasty meal.
The class appreciates much more than the delicious meal.
Fall is the best time for mushrooms in Minnesota, so feel free to feast on fungi. Please forage responsibly.
