Man Seriously Injured in Hunting Accident South of Bemidji

A 50-year-old man was airlifted to a Fargo hospital following a hunting accident just south of Bemidji.

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, Gary Peters had taken a 10-year-old juvenile out deer hunting in Helga Township on Sunday during the youth deer hunting season. After returning to the truck, Peters instructed the juvenile to unload the rifle.

But while trying to unload the bolt action Ruger .270 caliber rifle, the youth squeezed the trigger while Peters was standing in the line of fire. The bullet struck Peters and went through both buttocks.

Peters was transported by Bemidji Ambulance to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center and was then airlifted to a Fargo hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.
