Weekend Wrap Up: Things To Do Around Town Sept. 16-18

FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY:

4th Annual Duluth Hot Air Balloon Festival see website for times

Presented by Kern and Kompany, the festival will return this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth.  The event features Hot Air Balloons, Craft Brew Village, Kiwanis Club of Friendly Duluth Family Kite Fly, Live Music, and the “Tropicolor World Tour” of The Color Run 5K.  Registration for The Color Run 5K is also open and those wishing to register can visit www.kernkompany.com.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY:

Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit starting at 7:30 A-M both days

Red Lake Nation will host the Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit. Workshops and other training about soil health, seed keeping, organic food and more will be held for participants. Cost is $50 for Tribal producers and Native art vendors and $100 for agency staff.

 

SATURDAY:

Free Kids Turkey Shoot at 9 AM to 12:30 PM

Via Facebook: Kids ages 8-15 will have an opportunity to use a BB gun on paper targets to win great prizes, including a frozen turkey (must be present to win). There’s no cost to attend or participate! Held at Camp Oak Hills.

BARC from 10 AM to Noon

Via Facebook: Bemidji Area Reading Canines (B.A.R.C.) will be at the library Saturday, September 17. These trained therapy dogs are eager to listen to children read stories to them. Call 751-3963 to set up a 15 minute session for your child to read to the dogs. What a great way to boost reading skills and confidence. A signed parent permission form is required. Children 3-5 can also enjoy story time from 10:30 to 11:30.

Permit to Carry Class at 10 AM to 5 PM

Via Facebook: Course is for beginner to renewal seekers and every skill level in between. After Completing this class students may apply for a Permit to Carry a Firearm in MN and several other states. Class will included Basic Pistol handling skills, Ammunition selection, Firearm retention drills, Range time, and all other necessary requirements to obtain MN Permit to Carry. No Live Ammunition will be allowed in the classroom. There will be firearms for demonstration and practice purposes.

Paul Bunyan Inclusive Playground Ribbon Cutting Ceremony starting at 10:30 AM

Via Facebook: Volunteers from the Bemidji office of Kraus-Anderson have helped build the new Paul Bunyan Inclusive Playground. A ribbon cutting and grand opening will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, September 17 — Worldwide Day of Play — at the Lake Bemidji Waterfront. Families can enjoy activities from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Cost: $5.00/youth wristband or $3.00/wristband if you bring your bike and helmet.

2016 Snurdbird Open starting at Noon

Via Facebook: The 13th Annual Snurdbird Open will be held at Blueberry Pines Golf Club Saturday September 17, 2016 12:00PM. This golf tournament raises money for the Midway Snurdbirds Baseball Club and has become quite the event in part because of the numbers of participants and our supportive hosts. We are looking forward to another great day this year. $70 covers the entry fee. Included in that entry fee are mulligans, skins game and pre tournament lunch bar in front of the pro-shop. There will be prizes for winners in the following divisions, Open, Handicap and Women’s. A door prize raffle will follow the tournament.

Bemidji Brewing Oktober at noon to 6 PM

Via Facebook: We’ll be closing down the street in front of the Taproom to make room for music from Dennis Doeden and Friends, dancing led by Suzy and Hondo School of Dance, hammer schlagen, an oktoberfest themed selfie station, food from Bemidji Downtown Meats and 4 Kings Comfort BBQ and of course, great Oktoberfest beer. Plus we will have some sweet merch available for purchase!

Saturday Science at 2 PM to 3 PM

Via Facebook: Talk to our scientists to find out about the emerging field of Synthetic Biology as you participate in fun hands-on activities featuring new types of organisms, experimentation with cell functions, and even engineer superheroes! Should we re-engineer mosquitoes to not carry the Zika Virus? With the CRISPR technique, new doors for genetic engineering have been opened for the first time. Should we pass through them? Saturday Science is open to the public and is free with admission to the HSC exhibit floor. Saturday Science is free for HSC members.

Babe city VS. BisMan Roller Derby at 7 PM

Via Facebook: Come watch Babe City Rollers take on BisMan Bombshellz on our season final home game! Tickets are available at the Sanford Center and any Ticketmaster retail location. Adults 12$, kids 6-12 $6 and kids under 6 get in free! Charity of the bout TBD. After party at Buffalo Wild Wings.
