Tribal Summit Seeks Economic Growth

The Northern Minnesota Tribal Economic Development Summit is taking place this week at Seven Clans Casino in Red Lake.

The gathering, which takes place once every two years, features government representatives from the Leech Lake, White Earth and Red Lake Ojibwe bands. The goal of this event is to foster discussions between tribes about creating economic impact, especially outside of a casino industry that’s already thriving on native lands.

Tuesday’s events featured a keynote speaker named Joseph Nayquonabe, who serves as corporate commissioner for Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures. He shared his company’s work, which has resulted in a major boost in economic stability for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, with people in attendance.

A total of 18 classes will be taught through Wednesday, September 23.
