A student at TrekNorth High School in Bemidji will be competing in a state speech tournament. Junior Jake Atencio will be representing the Sundogs Speech Team as a finalist at the Minnesota State High School League Class A State speech tournament this Friday. He will be competing in the extemporaneous speaking category.

“I always say it’s like the most adrenaline-inducing category in speech just because of the pressure and the time crunch that you are under, but that’s also part of the reason why I like it too. It’s a lot of fun,” said Atencio.

Atencio is the only student from TrekNorth to compete at the state level. He is also involved in his school’s choir, student council and the National Honor Society.

“Just trying to be supportive of him as much as we can. He’s a easy child to raise, he’s made parenting very rewarding and it’s really easy to support him through all of his activities,” said Atencio’s mom, Heather Weaver.
