A Bemidji event explored ways to fix drunk driving issues in Minnesota. The day began with an explanation about a program called JOYRIDE, which offers Duluth residents who have had a lot to drink with ways to get home. Bars in the area can purchase vouchers, which people can pick up before taking a cab.

It has been successful in the Duluth area. They give an estimated 50-60 of the vouchers out in town per month. MnDOT District 2 officials say it could work in Bemidji with the right support. Traffic safety stakeholders heard Koren Hill’s story as well. On a night when she consumed six beers in 2014, the decision to drive just a few blocks resulted in an arrest and short jail time. She has recovered from the incident and wants to help address the issue in northwest Minnesota.
