District 8 Congressman Rick Nolan(D) spaced 32 years between terms in the House of Representatives. Nolan says Congress has changed a lot between his terms, and not for the better. The main culprit is money. Nolan says campaign advisers tell members of Congress they should spend 30 hours per week making phone calls to raise money. Fundraising not only takes time away from governing, but it also affects governing decisions when lobbyists become involved. In addition to money in politics, those present at the Crosslake Chautauqua event expressed their displeasure at the lack of compromise.
