Red Lake Man Sentenced To Nine Years For Attempting To Murder Minor Victim

A Red Lake man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for attempting to murder a minor victim.

19-year-old Dominic Edward Desjarlait pleaded guilty in December to assault with intent to commit murder. Today, Desjarlati was sentenced in US District Court in Minneapolis. Authorities say Desjarlait and the victim were rival gang members who knew each other.

According to documents filed with the court, Desjarlait began an argument with the victim and a group of six other minor males at a Red Lake grocery store on August 29th, 2018. The group left the store and relocated at a home on the reservation. Desjarlait followed them to the home, yelled out the victim’s name, and then used a firearm to fire multiple shots at the victim. Multiple bullets hit two nearby homes that were occupied at the time.

Desjarlait also admitted to a 2017 assault on the same victim in which he fired a shotgun at him, causing wounds to the victim’s face and upper body.
