Public Urged Not To Push Snow Out On Roads

Snow should not be pushed out onto the road way and it is unlawful to do so. The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds residents that under Minnesota law and many local ordinances, it is illegal to put snow on public roads, ditches and right of way areas.

“Improperly placing snow on or near a public road creates hazards including drainage problems, drifting, sight obstruction and unsafe access,” said Curt Larson, MnDOT’s maintenance superintendent, in a press release. “Keep crosswalks, intersections, entrances and exits clean and unobstructed.”

According to a press release, anyone found putting snow in these areas may be charged with misdemeanors and civil penalties may also be applied. These charges could be brought if the misplaced snow creates a hazard, such as a slippery area or a frozen rut or bump, which then contributes to a vehicle or pedestrian crash.

The civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person who placed the snow.

MnDOT plows and maintains about 12,000 miles of highways and interstates in Minnesota.
