Prominent Native American Chef Visits Local School

Like most chefs, Sean Sherman pretty much lives in the kitchen. But the man who calls himself the “Sioux Chef” because of his heritage is attempting to identify and create meals his ancestor’s ate before settlers arrived. He visited with students at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School today to share some of his knowledge of wild and traditional food in order to teach them about Native American food. While the ingredients are not what the students may be used to, faculty members noted the importance of this cultural experience. The chef who grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota even admits he is still learning about the food himself, but says it’s important for him to keep learning as much as he can
