Outdoor enthusiasts have a new place to go adventuring in Crow Wing County. The Portage Lake Trail opened today in Riverton.
Native Americans and trappers traveled the route between Gillespie Lake and Portage Lake more than 300 years ago. Now, the public can follow in their footsteps.
Travelers used the route for more than just trade. People paddling up the Mississippi River shaved off 11 miles by following the route containing the Portage Lake Trail.
The project begins with the vision of local historian Jack McAllister, who has lived in Riverton since 2006.
McAllister hopes the project will continue to expand to other lakes, completing the original route used so many years ago.
The trail includes interpretive displays for visitors to learn the history of their surroundings as they gaze upon the beauty.
