Passing Train Claims Life of Wadena Student

A weekend train accident has brought tragedy to the Wadena-Deer Creek school district.

According to the Wadena County Sheriff’s Office, freshman student Stacy Hundeby had been observed walking with her dog on the train tracks Saturday evening. Shortly after 6 p.m., a passing train struck her and the dog, killing them both.

Sheriff Michael Carr says he can’t comment on why the accident occurred yet as it is still under investigation.

The community, especially when it comes to classmates, is mourning Hundeby’s death with a memorial next to the tracks. Flowers, balloons and a cross decorate the area.

WDC superintendent Lee Westrum is asking for everyone to keep the Hundeby family in their thoughts and prayers.
