Northwoods Adventure – WWII Vet Races On D-Day Anniversary
Saturday marked the 71-year anniversary the United States and Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight Nazi Germany during World War II. Local veteran Bob Uppgaard was just one of those nearly 160,000 troops. There were nearly 6,600 American casualties that day, so to honor his fallen comrades, the 91-year-old Uppgaard ran – more so walked – in a 4K Saturday. During his time overseas, Uppgaard says his motto was “Do the impossible,” which he says clearly defines what he’s doing today at 91 years old. And just over 50 minutes in to the race, Uppgaard completed his goal, and crossed the finish line. Uppgaard is one of only 43 members of his 2,000-man battalion still alive today. He’ll be 92 this summer, and he says he plans to live another 18 years.
