The 17th annual Sweetheart Canoe Derby Paddled into Hackensack this summer. The C-1 State Championship Race held both single and tandem events. The canoeists paddle 13 miles across Birch Lake, up the Boy River, into Ten Mile Lake, and Back. The race remained a dog-fight after about 12 miles of paddling. The racers approached the buoys at the end with great determination, knowing their importance to the outcome. The power strokes of one veteran and one rookie prevail for the tandem championship.
