Northwoods Adventure: Permit to Carry Class
Ben Rudrud has served as a Minnesota Police Officer since 2005. A little over three years ago, he began teaching a Permit to Carry course to learn the basic skills necessary for owning and using a firearm safely and lawfully.
The six hour course starts from step 1 learning about the basics of operating a pistol, gun storage, shooting fundamentals, and most importantly the laws regarding personal protection and self-defense.
Students must be 21 years old, but any average person, like Norma Dixon sitting in on her first class, can take this course to learn about owning and operating a firearm.
The class is also offered for renewals.
After taking this course, students are then given their certificate of completion which they can then take to their local sheriffs office and apply for their permit to carry. From there if their background check is approved, their permit is good for the next five years.
For most students, they felt safety was one of their main interests in taking this course. But even after the shooting portion of the class, Rudrud can only hope they left with more knowledge on gun safety,
