Northwoods Adventure: Lakes Need Time to Freeze

It’s currently mid-December and Lake Bemidji has mostly open water.

The public would probably consider this to be strange, as ice fishing season typically begins in Minnesota by late November. The record for latest ice in for Lake Bemidji was Dec. 20, 2001.

El Nino, a phenomenon that’s caused warmer air to hover over Minnesota, is partially responsible. With ice fishing season coming later than usual, businesses that specialize in fishing have suffered.
