No Child Left Behind Act To Be Replaced

The Every Student Succeeds Act is set to replace the No Child Left Behind act.

There will be a public meeting today from 6-7 P.M. at Bemidji High School hosted by the Minnesota Department of Education.  The meeting is to generate a public understanding of the new legislation as well as gather public feedback.

Meetings like this one will be held across the state, as all states are now required to submit their plans to the U.S. Department of Education for the 2017-18 school year.

The flexibility waiver the state received in 2012, helped the federal education department move away from the No Child Left Behind act.  The act forced under performing schools to close or take on an improvement strategy.

Due to the Every Student Succeeds Act, states will now use a “fifth indicator” to show school success.  There has been no word on what that fifth indicator will specifically measure.

States will also have more freedom to spend federal money and according to the Bemidji Pioneer, “merge accountability systems for English language development and English learners.”
