Mussel Infestations Receive Treatment

Zebra mussels in a three acre area of Crow Wing County’s Ruth Lake reacted strongly to a pesticide.

It’s one of the first pilot tests that the DNR has begun to try on lakes that are infested with the invasive species.

Zebra mussels are dangerous because of their sharp edges and tendency to clog important pipes if they gather together. None of them survived the pilot test.

It’s likely to be used on other Minnesota infestations in the future, but only if the situation meets certain conditions.
