More Details Released on Death of Two-Year-Old Girl in Bemidji

More details are emerging about the Bemidji man charged with two counts of manslaughter in the death of a two-year-old girl.

Nathan Daniel Jackson Sr., 38, was charged with two counts of second degree manslaughter in the death of Kira Friedman.

Friedman was a foster child living in Jackson’s home. She is one of two foster children, and six children living under the care of Jackson and his fiance.

An autopsy determined freshwater drowning contributed to her death, but details obtained in court documents today also noted bruises and superficial cuts on the girl’s body, as well as reddish-pink fluid running from her nose.

Court documents show health and human services officials had expressed concern numerous times in recent years about Jackson and his fiancé, Amanda White’s care of foster children.

Court documents also show that Jackson’s fiance and his fiance’s sister told Beltrami County’s child protection investigator they were concerned Jackson was using methamphetamines or other controlled susbtances.

Jackson and his fiancé were not licensed by the state as foster care providers but rather through the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

A funeral service for Friedman is scheduled for Friday in Cloquet, with visitation throughout the night before.
