Minnesota Voters Set New State Record

About three million Minnesotans cast their vote in the general election for 2016. According to the release from the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State, 2,968,281 voters casted their ballots early or on election day.

Minnesota made history for setting a new state record for the total number of votes in the general election. Minnesota had a turnout rate of 74.72% based off of an estimated eligible voter count of 3,972,330, according to the release.

“Minnesota’s historic early voting and online voter registration numbers show that Minnesotans want the increased convenience and accessibility when it come to elections, and I look forward to continue working to make it as easy as possible for eligible voters to make their voices heard,” stated Secretary of State Steve Simon, in the release.

678,336 Minnesotans cast absentee ballots this year, which is three times the amount of absentee ballots cast in 2014. That year, 198,143 people voted absentee.

There will be a recount in Senate District 14  and in Congressional District 8 after it was requested by both losing candidates. SD14 will begin a publicly-funded recount on Monday, December 5th. CD8 has not yet scheduled a recount date as the recount will be paid for by the losing candidate.
