Minnesota requires vehicles to have two license plates

One car… two plates. That’s the law for cars in Minnesota. Minnesota State Police says the front license plate is just as important to them as the back plate.
While officer typically use the rear plate during traffic stops, they use the front plate to help them identify cars that are driving towards them in the opposite direction.
The State Patrol is also working on a new technology to help them identify the cars around them more quickly and safely.
There are only a few vehicles in the state that don’t require both front and rear plates. However, the vehicle’s owner has to apply to receive a special front plate, which aren’t for daily driving.
State police says motorcycles, moped and trailers also don’t need two plates.
