Minnesota DNR Reminds Ice Safety

After a couple of weeks of freezing temperatures, Minnesota’s lakes are freezing over. The Minnesota Department of Nature Resources is reminding how important ice safety is especially when it comes to checking the ice.
The DNR says wind, snow and moving water effect how quickly if at all lakes and rivers freeze. And they say a great local resource to check with before going onto the ice are local bait shops.
The DNR recommends anyone who goes onto the ice to have ice picks accessible and/or some kind of floatation device with them while on the ice.
The DNR recommends checking the ice thickness every 150 feet and they also consider no ice to be completely safe.
