Minnesota Congressman Vying For Top Democratic Position

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn) says he will resign from his congressional seat if he becomes the chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

In a statement released on Wednesday Ellison said the following:

“In order to further their commitment and maximize my effectiveness, I have decided to resign as a member of Congress if I win the election for DNC chair,” Ellison said. “Whoever wins the DNC chair race faces a lot of work, travel, planning and resource raising. I will be ‘all-in’ to meet the challenge.”

Ellison represents the Fifth Congressional District of Minnesota and was re-elected in November to his sixth term in the House of Representatives.

The members of the DNC will vote for the party leader on Feb. 23 in Atlanta.
