We have more information on the fatal shooting in South Minneapolis on Thursday night that killed a Minneapolis police officer.
Police responded to the scene of a double shooting shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday in the area of 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue S in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis. Officer Jamal Mitchell was providing medical attention to two men who he believed had been injured when one of them shot him in what authorities are calling an ambush.
“When officers arrived, they received gunfire immediately, and they exchanged gunfire,” said Minneapolis Assistant Police Chief Katie Blackwell at a press conference. “Two officers were injured and they were immediately brought to HCMC. Officer Jamal Mitchell died at the hospital, despite all lifesaving measures by Hennepin Healthcare. The second officer received non-life threatening injuries. The suspect on scene was injured, and even though he was injured in that gunfire, officers still rendered first aid and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
“Today, the city of Minneapolis lost a hero in Police Officer Jamal Mitchell,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. “This officer gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect and save the lives of others. His life, his service, and his name will forever be remembered in the city of Minneapolis. And I’ll say it again: Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell is a courageous hero.”
Officials say in addition to the suspected gunman, another person was also killed in the shooting, and a third person was gravely injured. A second officer and a firefighter were also injured.
Authorities said no arrests have been made in connection with any of the shootings.
The only person who has been identified so far is Mitchell. A father who was engaged to be married, Mitchell had been with the department for less than 18 months.
The Minneapolis Police Department honored Mitchell and another officer last year for rescuing an elderly couple from a house fire.
The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS), and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) are partnering to collect donations for the family of fallen Minneapolis Officer Jamal Mitchell, who was killed in the line of duty on Thursday, May 30.
