Meeting Explores Sandpiper Project’s Future

A pipeline project in the northern part of the United States is taking a new step. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is collecting information for writing an environmental impact statement over Enbridge Energy’s proposed Sandpiper route, which would move crude oil from North Dakota to Superior, Wisc., with over 300 miles of the total distance passing through Minnesota.

This possibility has left many locals concerned, and a large number of them addressed officials on Tuesday morning in Park Rapids. The most common issue deals with the chance for oil leaks, which have happened before. Enbridge says they work diligently to keep such incidents from happening. A draft of the Sandpiper EIS is expected to be complete by early 2017.
