In front of the hospital’s board of directors on Monday night, John Solheim made the announcement. 17b0475

Solheim has served as the hospital’s CEO since the summer of 2012. His decision to step down arrived soon after the board approved plans to move Cuyuna from a public hospital to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The board approved Solheim’s decision by a 14-3 vote.

Solheim had been criticized by hospital staff in the past. According to the Brainerd Dispatch, employees accused him of bullying people on staff and complained of a hostile work setting. Additionally, Solheim was previously CEO of St. Peter’s Hospital in Helena, MT but resigned there in 2012 almost 10 months after receiving a vote of no confidence from a majority of doctors on staff.

He will officially step down on Oct. 14.
