‘Macy’s Bill’ Passes MN House with Bipartisan Support
House File 341 (also known as “Macy’s Bill”), a piece of legislation authored by Republican state Rep. Josh Heintzeman of Nisswa, passed with strong bipartisan support in the Minnesota House on Thursday.
Heinzteman has worked many years on this bill after Macy Kujava and her four-year-old daughter were seriously injured in 2015 when a driver with a revoked license crossed into her lane and collided with her on a county road near Brainerd. The legislation enhances penalties for repeat offenders of driving without a valid license.
“I will just say to those watching and to the body today, this has been 10 years in the making that we have been working to address this issue,” said Heintzeman on the House floor. “It’s a very important day and that we are finally at that point, I believe, where we will be successful at making sure that this gap—I would maybe characterize it as, in terms of the penalties that are on the table in the case of causing this kind of harm.”
Legislators also applauded Macy’s mother, Sue, and her grandmother, who were in the House gallery at the time of the vote. The bill passed with 120 in favor and 14 opposed.
