Leech Lake Band Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony On Vacant Shingobee Property

What used to be a popular bar and grill on Shingobee Island more than 10 years ago will be brought to life again. After several hold offs in the project, today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of a new beginning.

The near 9,000 square foot building will be transformed into a modern sports bar, offering a full-service kitchen serving more than 100 people, a marina with around 40 docks, and a gaming area with around 50 slot machines.

The property sits by Walker Bay and right next to Highway 371. For business owners, this is a prime location.

Tribe officials are expecting to bring in about 50 permanent jobs as a result of this project.

“A year from now we’re going to be out sitting on this deck, and we’re gonna say we made a difference,” Michael Chosa of Leech Lake says.

The property will be managed by Leech Lake gaming and construction will begin later this week. Tribe officials are looking to open its doors to the public by Memorial Day 2017.
