Malaak Khattab joined the Lakeland News team in February 2019 as a multimedia journalist. She was born in New York City, grew up in Texas and studied abroad in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. Malaak made the move to the land of 10,000 Lakes from Chandler, Arizona.
Malaak began her career as an intern for Good Morning El Paso at KVIA-TV in 2017. During that time, she shadowed reporters, photographers and even helped produce the show. After her internship, she worked as a Content Writer for a startup digital media agency in Dubai.
Malaak is a 2017 graduate of American University of Sharjah where she majored in Mass Communication with a concentration in Journalism. She attended Franklin High School in El Paso, Texas where she was part of the Speech and Debate team. Malaak became interested in journalism when she was the subject of articles that centered around culture and ethnicity. It was then that she decided she rather be in control of a story than the subject of one.
In her spare time, Malaak loves to spend time with family and friends. She enjoys shopping, traveling, exploring new places to drink coffee and is a big adrenaline junkie. Malaak is a city girl at heart, but is thrilled to embark on this new chapter of her career and is excited to be joining the Lakeland community.
