Lake Treatment to Clean Serpent Lake Begins

BRAINERD- The Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation is working with the City of Deerwood and Serpent Lake Association to complete aluminum sulfate treatment (ALUM) to Cranberry Lake.

The treatment began today and will continue until June 7th. Boats with large tanks and sprayers will apply ALUM to Cranberry Lake.

ALUM is one of the naturally occurring substances that attract and bind excess phosphorus. A 2-year study determined Cranberry Lake to have the highest amount of runoff going into Serpent Lake with an excess amount of phosphorus inputs from wastewater discharge.

This project is part of a $1.2 million grant to reduce runoff to Serpent Lake. ALUM is safe for fish, invertebrates, and humans.
