Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Panelists Say More Work Needs To Be Done

A week after Bemidji recognized Indigenous Peoples’/Treaty Day, community leaders expressed mixed reactions to the proclamation in a panel discussion.

Many say they are thrilled with progress, but there isn’t enough acknowledgement of their history, creating a ripple effect and impacting current living situations for tribes like Standing Rock and their fight to protect their land.

Audience members asked panelists what their top priorities are, they agreed solidarity is key.

Tribe leaders say they will continue working with the city of Bemidji to improve relationships and recognition.
