In Focus: Traveling Exhibit To Enhance Area Historical Societies

Once a year, the Minnesota Historical Society gives large grants to various historical and cultural heritage projects. 54 recipients were awarded the grants of $10,001 or more this year. For the Minnesota’s Historic Northwest group, this means they’ll be able to provide many new exhibits around the area.

Tamara Edevold says that many of the area historical centers have artifacts mostly from the homestead era to modern day.

The Clearwater County Historical Society is part of the Minnesota Historic Northwest non-profit that received a $94,718 grant to create a traveling fur trade exhibit.

Each location in the group will have an interchangeable display case, which allows 15 different commissioned artifact replicas to be easily moved about.

She says a lot of tourists stop in but also a lot of locals interested in the history of the area. The traveling displays will hopefully bring back those who have already stopped in.

The group will now work out the logistics for the displays, as some locations are only open seasonally or at different times. They’ll also look for a company to build the stands and replicas.

The group hopes that the exhibit will be available to the public in 2018.

In the mean time, Clearwater County Historical Society will be debuting its newest military exhibit this weekend. The open house will run from 1 to 4 P-M on Sunday.
