In Focus: 12th Annual It’s Only Clay Exhibit

It may only be clay, but artists from all over the country have turned dirt and water into much more than just minerals. The Watermark Art Center’s 12th annual “It’s Only Clay” juried art show is back in Bemidji, and it’s showcasing a sampling of artists who use clay as their medium of expression. From the east coast to the west coast, the exhibit shows the Bemidji community ceramic art on a national level.

This year 28 pieces were entered into the show and guest juror Karin Kraemer judged each piece anonymously based on function, form, craftsmanship, and surface design. Artists have the opportunity to win prize money from the Watermark Art Center if selected or they have the opportunity to have pieces purchased for the Harlow Collection at Bemidji State University. Jeff Burger was one of the artists who was chosen for the Harlow Collection this year, and he’s one of the only artists representing local talent in a pool of national pieces.

Even if Burger is one of the only local artists to get recognized this year, event organizers say simply having the exhibit in town is rewarding for everyone. And, to enjoy this exhibit, you don’t have to be an art expert, you just have to be curious about clay.
