Ice Fishing Extravaganza Records All 150 Winning Fish Over 1 Pound

At noon the canon shot off to begin the 26th Annual Brainerd Jaycee’s Ice Fishing Extravaganza. Over 9,000 anglers took to the ice on Gull Lake, but minutes later a familiar face came running to the weigh in tent to become the first catch of the day.

For Shepard this was his second time at this tournament catching the first fish.

Although Shepard’s perch didn’t make the leader board, the weigh in line quickly formed with hundreds of anglers holding their plastic bags. A little over midway through the competition is when the largest catch of the day came in.

Volbert, in his second year entering this contest, said he was fishing in about 5 feet of water when he snagged the contest winner; a 5.33 pound walleye.

Large walleyes continued dominating the leader board with all 150 winning fish recorded at over a pound, the first time the Brainerd Jacyees had ever seen that happen.
