It was a normal evening for Jodi Schwen and her family on January 13th when they heard a loud booming sound at their home on Gull Lake, which she says, felt almost like an earthquake. Her mother and father-in-law live on a nearby lakeshore lot, and they experienced the same sensation, but it wasn’t until weeks later they discovered damage to their property. Left wondering what could have happened, Schwen started to research, and she found it might have been a so-called “cryoseism”.

While Schwen attributes the lakeshore damage to cryoseisms, officials say the loud boom sound and the damage could be completely unrelated. No matter the cause, residents now have a lot of clean up to do, and are hopeful to return their properties to normal.
