Governor Dayton Uses Veto on State Bills

Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed two bills and signed 19 others into law on Tuesday.

A pension bill and outdoor program funding bill were both denied. Dayton said the pension bill would have cut retired government worker benefits. He added that government employers and employees should be responsible for helping with the pension fund.

The outdoor funding vetoes were from the Legislative-Citizens’ Commission on Outdoor Resources. Dayton says he denied the legislation because the state house ignored some of the commission’s ideas.

Of the 19 bills signed into law, one that has received significant attention has to do with ground rules for police use of body camera. According to the legislation, most of this footage is now private and can only be accessed by people who appear in the videos. Should the footage involve great bodily harm, it would be public. Dayton signed the bill after a provision allowing officers to review footage before writing an incident report was removed.

In addition, Dayton’s signings created a legislative task force to address child care affordability concerns.
