Golden Apple: Cass Lake Schools Use Coding Money

Cass Lake-Bena schools used the money they earned from teaching students how to code toward even more activities.

The Hour of Code program, created by Code.org, awarded the district $10,000 last December.

The tools, called “maker spaces” by elementary teachers, help kids grow through hands-on work.

While building blocks and other low-tech equipment were part of what the district spent money on, the main focus was about robotics. Students learned how to manually control Star Wars BB-8 droids through a tablet app. They also were taught the basics of building circuits.

Elementary school officials hope to allow students to use this gear during indoor recess periods.
