Golden Apple: Bemidji High School Getting Ready for Homecoming Week
It’s time for Homecoming Week at Bemidji High School. Along with Spirit Week, the BHS Student Council has put together a slew of traditional and new events from September 20 to 26.
Students on the council wanted to get the entire school involved for this year’s homecoming events, and that’s why they’re bringing back the homecoming dance, which will be held at the high school on Saturday, September 20.
“We went through the process of bringing that up to our vice principal,” said Audrina, BHS Student Council Vice President. “That was a whole process, getting him to agree on it, and then finally, we were able to make that happen. I think it was like, the last one was 10 years ago?”
“We’re bringing it back,” said Josi, BHS Student Council President. “I really enjoyed picking out what we’re going to do for the theme, and what day we’re going to hold it on.”
“That was … a thing we wanted to do,” Audrina added. “And then actually having it play out is kind of cool, and that’s all just up to us, so it was cool.”
The weekend events don’t stop there. The Student Council decided to move the date of the Homecoming Parade from Thursday to Sunday this year, with a different route as well.
“We’re going to do it on Sunday at 4 p.m,” said Josi. “We’re going to start by 2nd Street and Midway [Drive in downtown Bemidji], right where they intersect, and then we’ll go around the block around there.”
“We think that will be easier, since last year, it was kind of a hassle to move around the entire downtown area,” Audrina stated. “So this year, I think we’re going to have a lot better turnout because it’s … a little bit more closed off, and we got more people involved.”
This year’s Homecoming Week will see old and new sporting events as well. The traditional Powder Puff and Unified football games are taking place on Monday, September 22, and a new Power Volleyball tournament is taking place on Wednesday, September 24. And before the big game on Friday, September 26 against Brainerd, there’s always some tailgating.
“That will be right outside of the school, and we’re going to include food trucks and then a car that you can smash to raise some money,” Josi said.
“My favorite event’s probably going to be the football game,” added Audrina. “I love football, but just [being] in the stands with everybody, everybody’s dressed up and supporting the team. It’s always fun.”
The Homecoming Parade is at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 21 and will begin on the corner of 2nd Street and Beltrami Avenue. The school is inviting everyone from the community to attend.
