Fosston High School Holds Visual Arts Festival

Over a hundred pieces of art were on display at Fosston High School as students from Class A school districts showcased their work.

There were ten categories in the visual arts festival, ranging from drawings and sculptures to print-making, video art and computer-based artwork. Judge Dennis Peterson said he looks for creativity in people’s artwork.

“Obviously you look for the skill of the student in their drawing, but being creative,” Peterson said. “Coming up with something new and exciting that maybe nobody else has done.”

The Region 8A contest Manager for the Visual Arts Festival, Mary Hanson, said that the judges have to follow a criteria that is set up by the High School League when evaluating the art pieces and are then rated accordingly.  The students can either receive a superior rating, and excellent rating or no rating at all.

During the festival, a lot of creative and imaginative artwork was on display. During the awards ceremony, which was held in Fosston High School’s gymnasium, students received medals and certificates for their art. Nine students at the festival received the the Spotlight Arts Award for their art. This award means that the students are eligible to showcase their art at the Perpich Center for Arts Education down in the Twin Cities. Mary Hanson said that the art that was displayed is widely varied.

“That’s kind of the fun of it. You see pieces from all different types of subjects and all ability levels, and again, I think the art that we get here is top notch,” Hanson said.
