Fishing Season in Full Swing

Summer may be coming to an end, but fishing season is still in full swing. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources predicted a strong year for fishing on Leech Lake in April.

Despite size limits on Walleye and lower numbers for Yellow Perch, people in the area have noticed a great turn out and even better catches so far.

“Our fishing season has been good. We’ve seen lots and lots of boats and trailers down in our city park,” said Cindy Wannarka, executive director for the Leech Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. “It seems like whenever we talk to a fisherman, they’ve had a good day on the lake. So it’s been a fun summer to talk to lots of fishermen here in Walker.”

“The Walleyes should be very good,” said Glenn Knutson of Shriver’s Bait Co. “People are seeing a lot of Muskies right now and that usually equates to people catching fish, catching Muskies in that September and October time so it should be wonderful.”

Other types of fish found in the lake include Largemouth bass, Bluegill, and Northern pike.

Open season for many fish species run through the end of February.
