DNR Reminds Ice Safety After Rain and Warmer Temperatures

December’s weather flirted on both side of freezing. And adding some rain to the mixed, the Brainerd Lakes Area lakes aren’t frozen as solid as they were a few weeks ago. And the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminded ice recreators to be care when they’re going onto the ice.
A tip from the DNR and ice fisherman is to check what kind of vehicles are already on the ice to see how safe it can be.
The DNR says the coastlines, where streams and rivers flow into lakes are among the known areas where ice could be the weakest. But that doesn’t mean anywhere can’t have a weak spot in the ice.
The DNR also recommends anyone traveling on the ice to bring ice picks and ropes with them in case they fall into the water.
