DNR Reacts to Recent Bear Attacks

Two recent bear attacks in Minnesota have prompted some concern.

In the last week, a Brainerd man was attacked while on a walk. In Sebeka, a woman was mauled on her porch during the night of May 13. Neither person’s injuries were life-threatening.

The DNR says incidents like this are rare in black bear country. Northwest region wildlife manager John Williams says approximately five bear attacks have occurred in the state since 1987.

People are asked to protect their food and feed pets inside during the summer and early fall, when bears are likely to be spotted outside.
