DNR Officials Band Geese in Bemidji

Rounding up geese for research…that’s what Minnesota DNR officials did today by banding geese in Lake Bemidji. Each year, officials head to the shores of Lake Bemidji to spend a day herding geese to track their survival and harvest rates. Officials use boats to bring the birds to the shore where they can live trap them into pens and attach metal bands to their feet. The work is done in mid to late July when the birds are molting and cannot fly. DNR officials band up to 100 geese in Lake Bemidji each year, and then they release them back into the water.
