Difficult Driving Conditions Reported In North Central Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises anyone travelling in northern Minnesota to slow down and use extra caution, especially in the following counties:

  • Becker
  • Beltrami
  • Cass
  • Clearwater
  • Hubbard
  • Itasca
  • Mahnomen.

Ice and slush have formed on several roads, which is causing slippery conditions. In addition, heavy snow and strong winds are limiting visibility and impacting high-profile vehicles.

MnDOT snow plow operators are working to improve the road conditions, but significant improvement may not be seen until the snowfall ends and winds begin to calm.

Officials do not anticipate any highway closures at this time; however, motorists are encountering brief lane and road closures where crashes occur.

Motorists should remember to:

  • Check road conditions at 511mn.org or call 511.  Please remember it takes time to get roads back to good driving conditions.
  • Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
  • Stay back at least five car lengths behind the snowplow, far from the snow cloud.
  • Stay alert for snowplows that turn or exit frequently and often with little warning.
  • Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.  Snowplows typically move at slower speeds.
  • Drive with your headlights on if it is snowing, regardless of it is day or night.
  • Don’t use cruise control when roadways are wet or slippery.
