Democrats Push For Special Session, Dayton Regrets “No Longer Affordable” Remark

Minnesota Democrats are continuing to push for a special session over the fall out from Governor Mark Dayton’s comments that the affordable care act is no longer affordable.

Senate Democrats would like to have a special session before Election Day to provide some kind of tax break or rebate for those hardest hit by the rising 2017 premiums.

The fix proposed by Senate Democrats would involve a tax credit to offset any premiums that exceeded about 10 percent of a person’s income.

Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt released a statement Thursday that said, “House Republicans are open to any and all ideas that will reduce health care costs and fix the crisis Democrats have created on MNsure and the individual market.”

Governor Mark Dayton said in a press conference Friday that he regrets his statement that he made last week about the Affordable Care Act being “no longer affordable to increasing numbers of people.” That statement has been a strong tool for republican candidates to use against Democratic candidates in the 2016 election cycle.
