Dayton Determines Fate on Tax Bill

Monday is the deadline for Gov. Mark Dayton to act on a tax bill containing tax cuts and credits for students, working families, struggling cities, farmers and businesses.

Last month the Legislature passed the bill that would cut rates for taxpayers by about $800 million over the next three years. Due to a wording error, Dayton said he will not sign the bill by the midnight deadline.

The Democratic governor said the problem should be corrected in a special session along with a list of other conditions, including the completion of transportation and construction project bills. His administration estimates that this wording mistake could cost the state treasury $101 million in the next three years.

House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, and Dayton are expected to meet later on Monday to review options on the tax bill and on a possible special session.
