Crow Wing County Seeks to Expand Landfill in Brainerd
The Crow Wing County landfill is trying to expand its area to allow more garbage to be dumped at the site.
The landfill has a 150-year agreement with the county to hold the garbage, but it is quickly running out of space. The county is proposing a nearly 50-acre increase to the existing landfill, which will extend the life of the landfill by approximately 15 years.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is currently accepting public comments on the project’s environmental assessment worksheet (EAW).
“The EAW looks at a whole slew of environmental regulations,” said Tom Strack, environmental services supervisor for Crow Wing County. “They look at things down to individual animals, like turtles, bald eagles. They look at water impacts that we might have, adjacent landowner impacts, to making sure that we’re covering all of our bases while we’re planning to expand the landfill and that everybody’s aware of what we’re doing. And it gives an opportunity for people to provide comment based off some of the things that we’ve found and how we’re planning to mitigate our actions.”
Anyone that wishes to comment on the EAW has until July 31st to do so. Comments can be made at the MPCA website.
