Community Spotlight: Learning To Fly

A high school exchange student’s journey from Mongolia to Minnesota gave him the opportunity to learn how to fly.

Timmy Kherlen has been interested in aviation since his early youth. Back at home, he worked with a simulator program on a computer. The chance to be a pilot on an actual plane, however, didn’t arrive until he connected with the Experimental Aircraft Association and its Young Eagles Program.

This experience, along with leadership training in the Bemidji Civil Air Patrol and local ROTC, have helped Kehrlen get a better grasp on what it will take to accomplish his dreams.

Kherlen plans to return to Mongolia in June. From there, he hopes to complete a computer science degree in South Korea before pursuing his aviation goals again.
