BSU Hosting Week Of Activities For 100th Homecoming

100 years ago in 1919, the Bemidji Normal School, which is is now known as Bemidji State University, made a name for itself. For the last 18 months, the university has been celebrating it’s 100 year history.

Josey Fog, Hobson Memorial Union Associate Director, says, “It’s super exciting, we’ve spent the last year really planning and coming up with some great ideas for programs, and being that it’s the 100^th homecoming, we’re just really exciting to be having all kinds of great programs going on.”

Homecoming is always a week full of fun and fellowship, and BSU’s Homecoming is no different. With a year of planning, this Homecoming is promised to be a week of fun.

“What I love about the idea of Homecoming and why we do it is to build this spirit in our students about, ‘I love being a Beaver and I want to be a Beaver,’ and hopefully they have an incredible week so that four years from now or a year from they think Homecoming was awesome, ‘I can’t wait to come back to that Homecoming,’ I can’t wait to go back to BSU to see all my friends,” says Fog.

Homecoming week here at BSU is in full gear and it’s off to a great start. With a comedy show, luncheon, dance, pancake breakfast, tailgate party and a football game still to come, this is surely a week you don’t want to miss.

Josh Christianson, University Advancement Executive Director, says, “We have some new events, they’re will be a time capsule that we’re doing on Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock down at Bridgeman Hall.”

Although students play a huge role on what happens during Homecoming week, that doesn’t mean that alumni is left out. Alumni events will start with the time capsule, followed by lighting the Homecoming hearth and alumni leaders in the classroom.

“That’s one of the biggest activities we have here at the Alumni Foundation is to make sure that our alumni is engaged and give them opportunities to come back. See the changes on campus, see what’s the same as when they experienced their time here at BSU, so it’s one of our highlights and one of the things we take very seriously throughout the course of the year is providing that opportunity,” says Christianson.

The staff at BSU is really excited for the Centennial Homecoming. Having students, alumni and the community here in Bemidji to take part in these events is a great way to make the university shine.
